Are dining chairs worth recovering?

Updated: Jan 2, 2023

High quality furniture is always worth reupholstering because it was built to last and not to be disposable like much of the furniture sold. If your frame is solid and made of hardwood it's sturdy and worth saving. Low quality furniture will have engineered wood and staples. In that case you're better off buying a new chair.

How much does it cost to reupholster a dining chair?

That question isn't quite as simple as it seems! There are many different styles of dining chairs. With that said I'll try to give you some basics!

Simple Slip Seat

A slip seat has the fabric pulled around and underneath. It can be made with or without welt cord around the bottom.

A dining chair like this averages $50 - $55 for labor. Fabric and new foam if needed is additional. You can get 2 seats out of 3/4 - 1 yard of fabric. The new stain resisitant fabrics are fabulous for dining room chairs! A new good quality chair like this would typically be over $100

Boxed Seat

A boxed seat has a seam around the top with the boxing fabric pulled underneath. It can also be made with or without welt cord. This type of cushion averages $60-$65 for labor. Fabric and foam if needed is additional. This type of chair needs about 1 yard of fabric for 2 cushions.

Fully Upholstered Seat and Back

This is where the "depends" part comes in! There are so many varieties and options that it's impossible to give an average. They typically start around $225 for labor.

Fabric and foam is

additional. A good quality new fully upholstered chair is usually over $300
