Cost of Upholstery Fabric

  1. Durabilitly of the fabric is one of the most important factors in choosing upholstery fabric. It's measured in double rubs. The fabric is actually rubbed until it shows wear. If the fabric you are considering doesn't give that information then most likely it's not appropriate for upholstery. It might be considered a home decor fabric more suitable for drapery, pillows or bedding.

  • Medium duty upholstery fabric is for furniture or cushions that are used occasionally. Double rubs for medium duty upholstery fabric is 15,000 - 25,000

  • Heavy duty upholstery fabric is appropriate for daily use. Double rubs for heavy duty fabric is 35,000-55,000

  • There are many fabrics available now that are over 100,000 double rubs those are considered commercial grade fabrics but are also appropriate for home use.

  • You can also use what's called multi purpose fabric as long as the double rubs are 35,000 or more. If you want a larger print fabric you will have more luck with this option.

  • Most moderately priced upholstery fabrics average around $40-$80 per yard. The more expensive ones being stain resistant or fade resistant.

  • There are also many designer fabrics available. The same guidelines for durability apply. Designer fabrics can be priced up to $400 and sometimes more per yard.

2. Another thing to consider is the location in your home that the upholstered piece will be.

  • If it's close to a full sun window you may consider an indoor/outdoor fabric. These fabrics are fade resistant. They are also mildew resistant and usually stain resisitant.

  • If you are selecting a fabric for a dining room or a piece that gets heavy use like a sofa consider a stain resistant fabric. This is fast growing group of fabrics so there are thousands of options.

3. Fabric content is an other consideration. Some fibers are inherently more durable than

others. Polyester and nylon are strong man made fibers. They are usually added to natural

fibers like cotton to make them stronger.

4. A fabric that has a pattern with loose threads in the design is not a good choice for a daily

use upholstery fabric. It could be a possibility for an occasional use upholstery fabric.
