How do I know if my furniture is worth reupholstering?

Updated: Jan 27

Here are some questions to ask yourself to determine if your furniture is worth reupholstering:

Is it a family heirloom?

My most frequent customer request is to "fix" a family heirloom.

Personally I love pieces that have been passed down. The majority of my furniture has sentimental value. I personally would rather pay to get it refinished or reupholstered then buy new as long as it fits my needs.

This love seat is going to be my labor of love as a remembrance of my Grandma LeDuc who had the mose beautiful home!

Do you want a specific color or look but can't find it?

Maybe you have a specific look in mind? This customer wanted her pair of loveseats reupholstered in pink and she wanted it to look like a MacKenzie Childs style piece of furniture.

This customers grandchildren thinks she lives "up north" so we gave her comfy recliner with an "Up North" look!

The customer who owns this rocking chair wanted it to look the same way it did when her grandma used it. Now she rocks her own child in it also!

Do you love the style?

Maybe you just fell in love with the unique style and can't find anything new that you like? I hear that a lot!

Does it fit well into your space?

Do you have a smaller space and large furniture doesn't fit? Maybe your furniture fits perfectly into your home but you just want an updated look?

Is it vintage?

"They don't make them like they used to" is very true of the majority of the furniture now. All furniture used to be made by artisans who made it to last. Now much of the furniture is made as inexpensively as possible and consequently becomes "disposable furniture".

Thrift stores and flea markets are great places to find unique pieces of furniture for your upholstery project. Look for pieces with sturdy frames and good lines.

Is it a good quality brand?

If you purchased your furniture new you probably know if it's good quality. If you purchased or received it used there are a few good clues.

Look underneath and feel the bottom or feel underneath the seat cushion. If you feel round metal springs like the picture on the left that's your first clue. Even better is when it has coil springs on the backrest also like the photo on the right!

A second clue can be found underneath the seat cushion. Look for a label.

This chart shows furniture brands in comparison to well known car brands that will give you an idea of the quality of brands. You can get great deals on qualtiy brand used furniture!

If you are looking furniture that will last used good quality furniture is worth reupholstering and is a great option. Purchasing good quality new furniture is usually more expensive.
