Is it cheaper to buy a new chair or reupholster?

Cost to reupholster a dining chair

That question is harder to answer than people might think. There are many styles of dining chairs. With that said, there are a couple basic styles. For a basic seat cushion the cost is $50 for labor. If it also has welt cord like the ones shown it is $55 for labor. 3/4 - 1 yard of fabric is enough to reupholster two chair seats. Upholstery fabric that is stain resistant averages $40-$75 per yard. If the foam needs to be replaced it is approximately $25 per chair. When you use good quality foam and upholstery fabric it will give you many, many new years with your favorite chairs! Is it cheaper to buy new chairs or reupholster? That depends upon many things. Do you have a dining set with a matching table and chairs? Are your chairs good quality? Are your chairs vintage or antique? Are your chairs passed down from your family? If you anwered yes to any of those questions I believe it's worth reupholstering. If you are crafty or love DIY this would be a perfect beginning project to try your hand at learning to reupholster!
