Learn to Reupholster: Part 5

Rebuild the support of your furniture

Now you are down to the wood frame. What's next? I would argue that the support is just as important if not more important than the fabric selection. Of course the fabric is the fun part but don't be in a hurry. Learn to upholster with longevity in mind.

Chair frame ready for upholstery

Dining room chair seats and ottomans will typically have some type of webbing for support.

Your sofas and chairs will have support on the arms, backrest and seat.

The arms will have webbing and sometimes chip board along with the webbing to help create a rounded shape.

The backrest will have webbing, zig zag springs or coil springs.

The seat deck will have zig zag springs or coil springs.

Coil springs are supported with webbing or metal framing. All springs, zig zag and coil, need to be stablilzed by tying them with spring tying twine.

After they are tied they are covered with burlap or another appropriate material. Then that is tied to prevent shifting and wear while it's being used.

Now you are ready for padding! The next lesson will be on foam, cotton padding and dacron
