Tips for caring for MudPaint Brushes

We at MudPaint scoured the globe for the finest tools we could find. A tough and sturdy brush is one of the best investments in your painting project that you can make. Our brushes are sourced from a small-batch, 100+ year old, 5th-generation family-run shop located in a small town in Wales, United Kingdom, and it is our pleasure to EXCLUSIVELY provide these products to our MudPaint customers! Our Natural Bristle Brushes come from ox ear hair that is sustainably produced from farm raised oxen. We have avoided the other brush lines that use hog hair from hogs raised in China as we are less certain about the sustainability and treatment of these animals.

Learning how to care for and clean your natural bristle brushes is important in order to continue using it time after time. Good, proper cleaning of your brush can give you a wonderful return on your investment. These brushes can be used for many years — even a good decade, if cared for!

  1. Is your painting project taking more than 1 day? No need to clean it every time! Just pop your brush into a zipper bag and it will be good to go the next day. If you are waiting a few days in between painting stick it in the refrigerator to keep it fresher.

  2. When you are ready to clean up just use a mild liquid dish soap. It works great! Be sure to use slightly cool water. Hot water will loosen the glue that holds the bristles in.

  3. Dry your brush by laying it flat. Don’t dry it standing with the bristles up. That will also affect the glue that holds the bristles in.

Our customers often opt for our Finishing Wax over our Matte Finish Clear Coat when they are looking for a slightly higher sheen for their project. While both products cover any piece remarkably well, the buffing and the “shining” that one can do with wax, allows it to get a slightly higher gloss.

We are just as picky on our wax brushes as we are in our paint brushes! Our wax brush’s main feature that has customers raving is that it has sturdier, stouter and stiffer bristles than our natural bristle paint brushes used to apply MudPaint and Matte Finish Clear Coat. These slightly stiffer bristles make it just perfect for applying our world famous waxes.

By maintaining a clean wax paint brush, you will be able to use the same brush to apply clear wax or dark wax.

Cleaning a wax brush is simple by following these tips:

  1. After each use, remove excess wax with a rag or paper towel.

  2. Once the excess wax is removed, soak the brush in Mineral Spirits until the wax has dissolved.

  3. Then follow the directions above for cleaning your natural bristle brushes.

That’s it! By regularly making sure you have clean brushes, they will last longer and the paint, clear coat and wax will go on smoother….and better!
