Learn to upholster: Part 1

Updated: Mar 6, 2023

Selecting upholstery fabric

The first thing to consider in choosing your fabric is the color. To do that start with your color palette. One way to choose your palette is to think about how you want your room to feel. Colors can create or enhance a mood in your room.

Red: love, fire, energy, strength

Purple: power, wealth, ambition, royalty

Blue: calm, stability, trust, depth

Green: freshness, nature, growth, safety

Yellow: joy, energy, positivism, brightness

Orange: warmth, creativity, happiness, success

I think the best color combinations come from nature.

Why? Because God is a master artist! Also those schemes seem natural to the eye. To get inspired, we only need to look around us. If you see a particularly beautiful or striking color in your daily life, try creating a scheme around it. Simply take a picture of a beautiful moment and create your color scheme from it. After you've selected your colors it's time to decide how to use those colors. Here are some beautiful examples of color palettes from nature. Ok I admit it! I LOVE color!! You'll see.....

WHAT IS THE 60-30-10 RULE?

It's a classic decor rule that helps create a color palette for a space. It states that 60% of the room should be a dominant color, 30% should be the secondary color or texture and the last 10% should be an accent.

HOW TO USE THE 60-30-10 RULE?

The 60% is the overall color of the room, the background color if you will. When you look at the space you'll say, it's the "gray" room, or whatever color you choose.

The next number in this rule is your 30%. It will become the secondary color in your space and will support the main color, but be different enough to give the room interest. Think of it this way, you'll be using half as much of this color as you did for your main color.

The fun percentage is your 10%; your accent color. It can be more bold or more subtle depending on what look you want. The 10% can be what gives the room character or keeps it that much more neutral, it's really up to you.

Suggestions for the 60%

Walls, accent pieces, rugs, sofa and large "foundation" pieces

Many designers suggest to make the larger more expensive pieces of furniture a neutral color. That way you can occasionally change your color pallete but they won't have to be replaced each time you do.

Suggestions for the 30%

Curtains, painted furniture, side chairs and smaller "foundation" pieces

Suggestions for the 10%

Throw pillows/pattterned fabrics, decorative accessories and artwork

Some rules can be broken

Decorating rules are helpful when we need some direction in decorating or choosing a color. So, what if you’re a rebel or just can’t envision a room so intricately balanced? That’s when it’s time to write your own formula. Maybe 30-30-20-20 feels right to you, then experiment with that formula. The key to this decorating rule is to pay attention to the color balance in your space. Once you’re aware of the visual weight of these color proportions, you can break the rules and find a balance that speaks to you.
