Upholstery Fabric

How to care for upholstery fabric

Note: Always pretest a small, inconspicuous area before proceeding with any step below. Clean spots or stains from the outside to the middle of the affected area, to prevent circling. Cushion covers should not be removed for laundering or dry cleaning. Hot water extraction or steam cleaning is not a recommended method of cleaning. Pile fabrics may require brushing with a nonmetallic, stiff bristle brush to restore appearance. To prevent overall soiling, frequent vacuuming or light brushing with a non-metallic, stiff brush to remove dust and grime is recommended. Overall cleaning by a professional furniture cleaning service only is recommended.

All upholstery fabrics carry a cleaning code. Cleaning codes are established by the Joint Industry Fabric Standards Committee.

Cleaning Code: DC

  • Dry Clean ONLY

Cleaning Code: S

  • Spot clean only with a water-free dry cleaning solvent.

  • Do not saturate or use water.

  • When cleaning a spill, blot immediately to remove spilled material.

Cleaning Code: WS

  • Spot clean with upholstery shampoo, foam from a mild detergent, or mild dry cleaning solvent.

  • Do not saturate.

Cleaning Code: W

  • Spot clean only with a water based shampoo or foam upholstery cleaner.

  • Do not oversaturate or use water, or use solvents to spot clean.

  • Blot immediately to remove any spilled material.

Cleaning Code: X

  • Clean only by vacuuming or light brushing with a non-metallic, stiff bristle brush.

  • Do not use water or solvent based cleaner.

Flock Fabrics

  • Spot clean only with a water based shampoo or foam upholstery cleaner.

  • Do not over wet, or use solvents to spot clean.

  • Use cautious agitation or rubbing while fabric is damp, as flock fabrics are sensitive to pile distortion and texture change with too much agitation.

  • Use extreme caution if using a professional cleaning service.

  • Allow to dry at least 24 hours before use after cleaning.

Crypton Upholstery Cleaners

Cleaning Q&A

Do Crypton Upholstery Cleaners work on all fabrics?

Crypton Upholstery Cleaners work on all water cleanable textiles (i.e. textiles with cleaning codes of WS, or W). For for details about specific fabrics see the cleaning guide PDFs which are available via a link on each fabrics detail page.

What cleaner should I use?

In the Crypton Upholstery Cleaner line there are two stain removers, and a fabric disinfectant & deodorizer. Look at the Spot Cleaning Chart to help determine which product to use for your spill.

Why are Crypton Upholstery Cleaners so different?

Our cleaners are pH neutral, water based, ready to use with no harsh chemicals, no bleach and no solvents. Crypton Upholstery Cleaners were made to work quickly on stains like iodine, marker, lipstick, food and beverage stains, and protein stains like blood and grass. Our fabric freshener is a neutral quaternary disinfectant that removes odors and leaves fabric fresh and clean.

What is pH cleaning?

This scale indicates the acidity or alkalinity of a liquid. The scale is from 1-14, the lower numbers of 1-6 represent acid solutions, the higher numbers of 9-14 represent alkaline solutions. A solution in the 7-8 pH scale is considered neutral. Water has an approximate pH of 7, bleach around 5 and hair shampoo around 9.

Why is it important to use pH neutral cleaners?

If soapy, alkaline cleaning solutions are used on fabrics, and not thoroughly rinsed out, the residual left in the fabric will attract dirt very quickly.
