Why are custom throw pillows so expensive?

Updated: Sep 6, 2023

Not an average throw pillow

The average throw pillow is a square sewn on 3 sides, turned inside out, stuffed and machine sewn closed on the 4th side.

You will notice that they have curved sides and pointy corners. That's because the middle of the pillow is filled but the corners and not!

So how do you solve that? By making a custom throw pillow. If you have a sewing machine it's a pretty easy DIY. Here's how...

How to make a custom throw pillow

1. Choose your throw pillow size

2. Cut your fabric: Cut 1 inch larger, than your finished pillow size to allow for 1/2 inch seams.

3. Cut your corners: Measure a 1/2 inch down and in from each corner. Then cut in at an angle approx 4 inches, depending upon the size of your pillow, toward the center of each side. This prevents the corners from being pointy!

4. Install the zipper: First with right sides together sew one side of the pillow 2 inches in from each corner using a 1/2 inch seam allowance. Second fold the rest of the sewn side along the 1/2 inch line and iron it down. Third install the zipper along the ironed seam.

5. Sew the other sides: Make sure that the zipper is partly open before sewing the other 3 sides. Sew the remaining 3 sides and then turn your pillow right side out.

6. Choose a pillow form: Your pillow form should be approximately 2 inches larger than your finished pillow size. This will make sure that your pillow is nice and full! We sell pillow forms in even numbered increments from 14 inches up to 28 inches. We offer Hollofill, Slick Fiber and Down/Feather pillow forms.

7. Stuff it: Insert your pillow cover, zip it up and throw!
